About This Piece
Commissioned for the 2018 Southwest American Choral Directors Association Conference. Every day, innocent children are caught in the midst of war and conflict. The poem “I Saw A Child” was commissioned as a response to the Syrian Civil War. Poet Bette Milleson James captured both the hope and hopelessness one feels when faced with the truth of the human cost of war. A portion of the proceeds of this title are donated to refugee resettlement.

Full Text
I saw a child, wistful and sad, Dreaming of peace and places of joy. Who will care for you, little boy? Who will heal your body, soothe your soul, And love your heart back to health, Far, far away? I saw a child, gentle, alone Yearning for love, and places of joy. Who will care for you, little girl? Who will heal your body, soothe your soul, And love your heart back to health, Far, far away? I saw a child, hopeless in need, Broken in spirit, in body, in heart. Who will care for you, little child? Who will heal your body, soothe your soul, And love your heart back to health, Far, far away? Little child, you will rise, In a day beyond strife, When memory claims the sorrow. Who will care for you, little one? Who will heal your body, soothe your soul, And love your heart back to health, Far, far away? by Bette Milleson James
